Italy bridge: Genoa motorway collapse kills at least 22
|
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-45183624
A motorway bridge has collapsed near the northwest Italian city of Genoa, sending vehicles plummeting up to 90m (295ft) to the ground and killing at least 22 people, officials say.
Video footage appears to show one of the towers holding up the suspension bridge collapsing in stormy weather. Vehicles fell along with bridge debris on to rail tracks.
How the fuck can something like this happen in modern times?

Yeah Riddle it only has to be millimeters in the movement of increased force from the normal design where a shear force is reached resulting in a catastrophe
Its like continuously bending a piece of wire back and forward eventually it will snap

Haven't read about this, but what 67 says about structures moving is most likely the reason. Flexibility is key and the reason subsidence is such an issue which left without underpinning can result in eventual collapse. In LA they build most new buildings with flexibility to withstand earthquakes which are just movements on larger scale.
Re: Hammersmith flyover, I used to drive under it everyday for ten years and often over it and still do also when the more recent major repairs were carried out. There was talk of digging an underpass which makes sense.

Not entirely wide of the mark. When I did engineering at university my first year project was a space frame cantilevered roof structure and the stuff I built it from that went in the test rig was, effectively, adult meccano. God I hope things have come on a bit since then.

According to The New Scientist, recent reports say 1 in 8 road bridges in the US and Germany is in a poor state, and the same is true of one in seven in France.
Also, Hammersmith flyover was in a much worse state than expected when they did acoustic testing (listening for individual wires snapping) on it, and they had to do remedial work.

Well Nursey all I can say he is fucking wasted being on WHO all day long... he should get out of his pit and build another bridge over the Thames Estuary.... as that QEII thing is fucking SHIT... this time doing it between Southend and the Isle of Sheppey... we already got a mile long pier... just add it on from there... can't be hard

Sold, weirdly I was just about to comment that I can sort of follow what 67 and others are saying, despite the fact that my only engineering knowledge mostly comes courtesy of Rolt's excellent biography of IKB.

I was in Genoa a month ago and not far from that bridge. Italian drivers are bad and their roads are even worse pot holes a foot or more deep and three to four feet wide in places akin to a third world country.
So no surprise that it collapsed really.

Just looking at it overbyyer yeah that is weird
Why would someone build a bridge directly in front of a tower block?

It looked to be an unusual configuration - had a slip road at high level with a very sharp bend on it - like a rollercoaster.

Bridge experts are engineers mate I'm on the track side of Engineering but the fundamentals are the same
Are you good at anything or not? because you seem to have a chip on your shoulder about those that are good at something and make a good living out of it

comma Tower Bridge is a suspension bridge the designer failed to follow the fundamentals of the design and replaced the flexible cables with reinforced concrete
And I agree it is a tragedy
